The Commerce Department’s final revision of second-quarter gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic output, showed that economic growth was unchanged from the second estimate, holding at an annualized rate of 2.1%.

However, consumer spending, America’s economic engine, was revised much lower, to a 0.8% annualized rate, according to data released Thursday. That’s down from the 1.7% rate reflected in the previous estimate. Spending in the second quarter grew at its weakest pace since the first quarter of 2022, when it was flat.

Thursday’s hefty revision on spending shows that Americans pared back their spending from the beginning of the year much more than previously thought. Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of economic output. US consumers spent less on services and nondurable goods, which are products meant to last a short while, such as clothes, cleaning supplies and beauty products.

The second quarter stretches from April through June, but the Commerce Department releases consumer spending figures on a monthly basis. In July, consumer spending jumped a robust 0.8%, the strongest monthly gain since January, as shoppers spent on concerts, films, toys and recreational equipment. Spending figures for August will be released Friday.

２０年第１・四半期のＧＤＰは年率換算で前期比５．３％減に下方改定。前回発表は４．６％減だった。ただ、２０年通年では第３・四半期と第４・四半期が好調だったことから２．２％減と、０．６％ポイント上方改定された。

２１年第１・四半期は５．２％増と、前回発表の６．３％増から下方改定。個人消費が下方修正された。通年の成長率は５．８％と、前回発表の５．９％から引き下げられた。州・地方政府支出、連邦政府支出、非住宅設備投資が下方修正された。

２２年第１・四半期は２．０％減と、前回発表の１．６％減から下方改定。個人消費は１．３％増から横ばいとなった。通年のＧＤＰは０．２％ポイント下がり１．９％増。個人消費、在庫投資、州・地方政府支出、輸出が下方修正、輸入は上方修正された。

Whether you’ve shopped for groceries, gas or even a car in the past year, you know that prices have risen significantly since 2022. The Consumer Price Index report from July 2023 showed that prices on the “all items index” have increased 3.2% in the past 12 months.

Because the cost of goods has increased so much, the living wage needed for a single person has also risen across the country. But how much you need to live varies dramatically by state.

GOBankingRates recently surveyed annual living expenses for a single person in each of the 50 states. The researchers used the 2021 Consumer Expenditure Survey data (the latest available) for a single person from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to calculate the annual cost of necessities based on data from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center’s 2023 Q1 Cost of Living Data Series.

With the cost of necessities in hand, researchers doubled the total annual cost of necessities to determine a living wage that also factors in discretionary spending and savings.

日本のように電車が通り移動がしやすい州から、車がないと生活が成り立たないような州までじつに様々。州ごとに利便性がまったく異なるということもあり、生活費も州によって差が存在する。

金融情報サイト『GO Banking Rates.com』が、「1年間に単身者が支払った生活費」と題し、州別に分析しているのでその一部をご紹介。

アメリカでもっとも
“リッチ”な州、“リーズナブル”な州
アメリカの中で生活費がもっとも高額なのはハワイ州で、平均11万2411ドル（約1,600万円）。カルフォルニア州やニューヨーク州におよそ2万ドル（約300万円）の差をつけてトップにランクインしている。

孤立した島々で形成されているハワイは、輸送の大半が船で行われるため、運送コストが増加してしまうことが主な原因だとか。また、土地も限られているため家屋の価格も他州と比べて高くなってしまうらしい。

一方で、生活費がもっとも安い州はミシシッピ州で、平均4万5906ドル（約670万円）。

その理由はまさしくハワイの裏返し、輸送のしやすさにある。港、河川、そして他州に比べて大きい高速道路があることが要因らしい。

Sept 7 (Reuters) - The number of Americans seeking jobless benefits for the first time fell unexpectedly last week to the lowest level since February, pointing to a U.S. job market that remains relatively tight even as other recent data indicate it has begun to soften.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 13,000 to 216,000 in the week ended Sept. 2 from a revised 229,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was the lowest since the same level was touched in the week ended Feb. 11 and it marked the fourth straight weekly decline.

申請件数は４週間連続で減少し、２月１１日までの週以来の低水準。他の指標で労働市場の軟化が始まった可能性が示唆される中でも、なお引き締まった状態にあることが示された。

８月２６日までの１週間の継続受給件数は１６７万９０００件で前週（改定値）の１７１万９０００件から４万件減少。７月１５日までの週以来の低水準となった。

WASHINGTON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - U.S. job growth picked up in August, but the unemployment rate jumped to 3.8% and wage gains moderated, suggesting that labor market conditions were easing and cementing expectations that the Federal Reserve will not raise interest rates this month.

The closely watched employment report from the Labor Department on Friday also showed 736,000 people entered the job market last month, boosting the participation rate to the highest level in 3-1/2 years.

ロイターがまとめたエコノミストの予想は１７万人増加。ハリウッド俳優のストライキや運輸会社の経営破綻があり、伸び鈍化が予想されていた。

失業率は３．８％で７月の３．５％から上昇した。ただＦＲＢの第４・四半期の予想中央値（４．１％）は下回っている。

賃金の伸びはやや鈍化。平均時給は前月比０．２％上昇。７月は０．４％上昇だった。前年比では４．３％上昇。７月は４．４％上昇だった。
